A man is shot and killed during a drive-by shooting Anthony Delbert Stubbs Jr., a 23-year-old Black man, was killed in the early morning hours of Friday, December 2, 2016, after returning to the North Side of Minneapolis from a night out with his sisters. gets forgotten by sunrise. Minutes later, the stillness broke with rapid bursts of gunfire from the next block over, and when his family tried to reach him, the calls went unanswered until the hospital delivered the news they were dreading. 
He had been shot near the intersection of North 44th Avenue and Fremont Avenue, less than a block from where his family lived, and he was taken to North Memorial Medical Center. Despite efforts to save him, he died there hours later. Those who loved him remembered a young father who had been trying to steady his life—someone friends called “Stubbs,” while his sister still used a childhood nickname, “Annie,” as if saying it could pull him back into the room. In the wake of his death, online tributes described him as outgoing and quick with humor, someone who loved cooking and had enrolled in community college to pursue a culinary degree, working part-time as a security guard to help pay for school. 
Investigators released few public details about the shooting itself, but court filings tied to the investigation described what police believed happened in the moments afterward. Neighbors reported hearing roughly 15 to 20 shots, and a vehicle was seen speeding away from the area. Police stopped a car shortly after and arrested three men connected to that vehicle. A search described in the warrant materials reported a Glock. 45-caliber handgun in the trunk, beneath a white cloth, alongside a container of disinfecting wipes. Police said one of the three men—a 25-year-old from Minneapolis—was later released pending further investigation, while the other two—a 23-year-old from St. Paul and a 25-year-old from Brooklyn Park—remained jailed at the time for alleged probation violations related to previous cases, not for charges in Stubbs' killing. No suspect names were publicly released in that reporting, and the article noted that suspects were not being identified because no one had been charged in the homicide.
