On an autumn morning in 2016, the quiet of a Minneapolis neighborhood was broken by a grim discovery. Michael Whitelaw, a 50-year-old African-American male, was found deceased in his ground-floor apartment on Glenwood Avenue North on October 27, 2016. The authorities were alerted to the situation when his landlord, concerned after not hearing from him, requested a welfare check. Responding officers entered the residence to find Whitelaw had suffered from multiple gunshot wounds.
