Ms. Dejoie, a mother, was shot and killed while sitting in her vehicle on the side of Highway 22 at the Interstate 10 overpass.
The circumstances leading to her death were particularly harrowing. Authorities reported that her fiancé, Jarvis McNair, had pursued her car before the fatal shooting. In a horrifying turn of events, McNair opened fire, striking Dejoie in the face.
