Willie Gray, 34, a Black/African American man from Montgomery, was killed late on the night of March 28, 2023, after gunfire erupted on the 5100 block of Carmichael Road, just inside the bypass. Police were called to the scene at about 11 p.m., and when officers arrived they found him with fatal gunshot injuries. He was pronounced dead there, turning an ordinary stretch of roadway into the center of a homicide investigation and leaving his death to echo through Montgomery in the days that
followed.
At first, little was released beyond the bare facts. Investigators identified Gray as the victim and said only that they were working the case as a homicide. The early public account was stark and unfinished: a man shot, a life ended, and a community left waiting to learn who pulled the trigger and why. Funeral notices later confirmed his death and placed his passing on March 28, 2023, while family and friends were left to gather around the sudden loss.
Less than two weeks later, police announced an arrest. On April 10, 2023, Montgomery authorities said 23-year-old Quintavious Langford of Montgomery had been charged with murder in Gray’s killing. According to the report on the arrest, Langford was taken into custody by the Montgomery Police Department’s Gang Unit and booked into the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where he was held without bond.
