Demetrus Porter, a 39-year-old Black man from Montgomery, Alabama, was caught in violence in the early-morning darkness of May 12, 2024, when police said he was shot at about 2:54 a.m. in the 500 block of East Patton Avenue. What began as a shooting call turned into something far graver in the days that followed. Porter was rushed to a local hospital, where he fought for his life before dying from his injuries on May 20, and with that loss the case shifted from a shooting investigation to a homi ...
