In the summer of 2014, the city of Washington, D.C. was shaken by the brutal and ultimately fatal attack on a beloved 76-year-old male shopkeeper. James Oh, a Korean man known for his kindness and generosity, was the owner of the Gold Corner Market in the 16th Street Heights neighborhood. On July 4th, his store became the scene of a violent robbery that would end in his tragic death and leave a community in mourning.
The incident left a lasting impact on those who knew him and the neighborhood he served for so many years.
On that Friday evening, at approximately 5:20 p.m., two men entered the Gold Corner Market. Their faces were obscured by masks, and at least one was armed with a handgun. The assailants confronted Mr. Oh and his wife, demanding money from the cash register. When his wife struggled to open the drawer, she was struck by one of the men. Mr. Oh complied with their demands, handing over about $3,000. Despite his cooperation, he was brutally beaten and struck in the head with a weapon. The attackers fled the scene in a stolen black Jeep, which was later recovered by police. James Oh was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries were too severe. He succumbed to the head trauma four days later, on July 8, 2014.
In the wake of the attack, the Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation, releasing surveillance footage of the two suspects to the public in the hopes of identifying them. The men were described as two Black males, both wearing hooded sweatshirts. A reward of $25,000 was offered for any information that would lead to an arrest and conviction in the case. Despite the circulation of the surveillance images and the financial incentive, there have been no public announcements of any arrests made in the years following the murder of James Oh. The case has grown cold, and the identities of the two men responsible for the violent death of a cherished community member remain unknown. His death stands as an unsolved crime, a painful memory for a neighborhood that lost a man described as being like a family member to his customers.
