In the late morning of May 25, 2023, the life of 23-year-old Deunte Jurrell Winston was cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. Responding to a call at approximately 9:35 a.m., Birmingham Police Department officers discovered Winston unresponsive on a porch in the 4300 block of 44th Avenue North in the Inglenook community. He was suffering from a gunshot wound.
Medical personnel transported him to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Preliminary investigations into the young man's death suggested that a dispute preceded the fatal shooting. It is believed that Winston was involved in an altercation with another male just before the incident. In the moments that followed their confrontation, the other individual reportedly fired shots at Winston and then fled the scene, leaving him gravely wounded. The community was unsettled by this act of violence, which contributed to a series of violent incidents in the city around that time.
In the initial phase of the investigation, no immediate arrests were made, and law enforcement appealed to the public for any information that could lead to a breakthrough in the case. A significant development occurred on June 6, 2023, when a 17-year-old male was taken into custody. The teenage suspect was subsequently charged with Winston's murder and held at the Jefferson County Jail without bond. Due to his status as a juvenile, authorities did not release his identity to the public.
