On a late spring evening in 2023, tragedy struck in the Center Point area of metropolitan Birmingham, Alabama, forever altering the lives of a local family. Quindell Javon Rhodes, a 24-year-old Black male, became the victim of a fatal shooting on May 31st. The incident unfolded around 9:18 p.m. in the 500 block of Tupelo Way, a residential street that was soon to be swarmed with law enforcement.
When Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered Rhodes with a
gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to UAB Hospital for emergency medical treatment, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The initial chaos of the scene gave way to a homicide investigation as detectives began to piece together the events that led to the young man's death.
The investigation into the death of Quindell Javon Rhodes led to the identification of a suspect. Authorities arrested 23-year-old Carlos Dion Harper in connection with the shooting. He was subsequently charged with capital murder for his alleged role in Rhodes's death. In a related charge, Harper was also accused of second-degree assault for allegedly striking another man, Quintez Lamar Rhodes, with a pistol during the same altercation. While an arrest has been made, the motive behind the fatal shooting remains under investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office as they continue to seek information from the public.
