In the late summer of 2023, the life of a young man, 23-year-old Devin Tyler McDonald, was tragically cut short in Huntsville, Alabama. On the morning of Tuesday, August 29th, Huntsville Police responded to a call about an unresponsive person in a parking lot in the 300 block of Quality Circle. There, they discovered the body of Devin Tyler McDonald, who was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound.
Investigators from the Major Crimes Unit quickly determined that McDonald had
been shot and killed the previous night, Monday, August 28th, in what they believe was a robbery attempt. The investigation swiftly pointed to 28-year-old Damon Andrew Blinks of Greencastle, Indiana, as the primary suspect. Authorities believe that after the shooting, Blinks fled the state in McDonald's vehicle.
A significant break in the case came two days later, on Wednesday, August 30th, when law enforcement officials in Carmel, Indiana, located McDonald's stolen vehicle. When they attempted to pull the car over, Blinks led them on a high-speed chase before abandoning the vehicle and attempting to flee on foot. He was quickly apprehended. Inside the vehicle, authorities recovered evidence connected to the crime.
Following his capture, Blinks was initially held in Indiana on charges of theft, possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, and unlawfully carrying a handgun. Huntsville Police investigators traveled to Indiana to interview Blinks, and on August 31, 2023, they formally charged him with capital murder in the death of Devin Tyler McDonald. After more than a year in custody in Indiana, Blinks was extradited back to Madison County, Alabama, in November 2024. He is currently being held without bond. The state of Alabama has filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty in the case against him, citing the murder occurring during a robbery as an aggravating factor. A status conference to discuss a trial setting was scheduled for November 2025.
