In the early morning hours of May 30, 2025, the life of 21-year-old Tyrek Keshun Norris, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Huntsville, Alabama. Gunshots rang out around 4:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Binford Drive, drawing a swift response from the Huntsville Police Department. Upon arrival, officers discovered a chaotic scene where Norris had been fatally wounded. Another individual at the location was also struck by gunfire but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Despite emergency efforts, Tyrek Norris did not survive.
The investigation into the shooting quickly developed as police gathered evidence suggesting a suspect was inside a nearby apartment. This led to a standoff, with HPD establishing a perimeter and calling in multiple units for support, including the SWAT team and crisis negotiators. Authorities issued verbal commands, and eventually, several people, including a person of interest, exited the apartment and were taken in for questioning by the Major Crimes Unit.
The investigation led to the arrest of 19-year-old Jamayah Pitts. Evidence indicated she was present at the scene of the shooting and was located inside the apartment connected to the incident. Pitts was subsequently charged with reckless murder in connection with Norris's death.
Following her arrest, Pitts was held in the Madison County Jail. A judge set her bond at $30,000 under the condition that she does not possess a firearm while awaiting further legal proceedings. Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing and that more charges could be filed as they continue to look into the circumstances that led to the deadly shooting.
