In the early morning hours of September 3, 2023, tragedy struck in Montgomery, Alabama, when Stoney Lewis, a 60-year-old African American male, was found with a fatal gunshot wound. The incident occurred at approximately 5:55 a.m. in the 1500 block of South Holt Street. Montgomery police and fire medics responded to a call and, upon their arrival, pronounced Lewis dead at the scene.

The Montgomery Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting death of Lewis. Within days, their efforts led to the identification and arrest of a suspect. On September 7, 2023, 68-year-old Willis Davis, also an African American male, was taken into custody and charged with murder in connection with the death of Stoney Lewis.
Following his arrest, Willis Davis was booked into the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where he was being held without bond. Authorities have not publicly released any information regarding a potential motive or the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting. A memorial service for Stoney Lewis was held on September 16, 2023, at the chapel of E.G. Cummings Memorial Funeral Home in Montgomery. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
