On a Tuesday afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of Byron Jerome McNeal Jr. was cut short by gunfire. McNeal, a 28-year-old Black man from the nearby city of Bessemer, was found wounded at the intersection of 2nd Street North and 6th Avenue North. The shooting, which occurred on March 19, 2024, brought a swift response from law enforcement and emergency services.
Police officers were called to the scene around 4 p.m. and discovered McNeal suffering from a gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services arrived shortly after and transported him to UAB Hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, McNeal died from his injuries at the hospital.
The Birmingham Police Department immediately began a homicide investigation. Through their work, they identified a suspect in the shooting as 27-year-old Raheem White of Pleasant Grove, Alabama. Soon after being identified, White turned himself in to the police.
Authorities secured a warrant and formally charged White with capital murder. The charge specified that the killing allegedly involved the suspect firing from a vehicle. Following his arrest, White was booked into the Jefferson County Jail, where he was held without bond. As of March 2024, the case was set to proceed through the court system.
