In the quiet community of Letohatchee, Alabama, the life of 79-year-old Rueben Charles Squire was brought to a tragic and violent end on Friday, July 26, 2024. Responding to a call, deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office discovered Squire at a residence, where he was pronounced dead at the scene from a fatal gunshot wound. The incident, which occurred in the 9000 block of Old Selma Road, quickly transitioned from a death investigation to a homicide case as evidence of foul play emerged.
The investigation into the death of the elderly man led authorities to two individuals. The first to be taken into custody was a 16-year-old male, whose identity has been withheld due to his age. He was arrested and subsequently charged with capital murder. Following this initial arrest, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office apprehended a second suspect, 19-year-old Demario Harris Jr. of Montgomery. Harris also faces a charge of capital murder in connection with the shooting death of Rueben Charles Squire. Both the juvenile and Harris were placed in the Montgomery County Detention Facility. The circumstances that led to the shooting and the relationship, if any, between the suspects and the victim have not been publicly disclosed by law enforcement officials. The case against the two individuals is now proceeding through the legal system.
