In the late summer of 2024, the life of 37-year-old Donwaski L. Puryear, a resident of Decatur, Alabama, was tragically cut short. On the evening of August 21st, Puryear was at the Blossom Wood Apartments on Beltline Road when he sustained a gunshot wound in what authorities have described as a domestic violence incident. He was rushed to Huntsville Hospital for medical attention.
For eight days, he fought for his life, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on August 29, 2024.
Puryear was known by his loved ones as a quiet and hardworking man. A graduate of Courtland High School, he was employed at General Electric. His family, including his mother and siblings with whom he shared a close bond, remember him as a man with a big heart. Above all, he was a devoted father to his three children, a role his sisters said he cherished, describing him as a number one dad who was deeply involved in their lives.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Decatur police arrested a suspect, 32-year-old Takaya Stover. Stover was taken into custody and initially charged with domestic violence in connection with the shooting. At the time of Puryear’s death, law enforcement officials indicated that the charges against Stover were expected to be upgraded. Information regarding any subsequent legal proceedings, including a trial or conviction, has not been made publicly available.
