In the summer of 2021, a burst of violence on a quiet Sunday morning in Decatur, Alabama, ended the life of 44-year-old Viet Van Truong. On June 20, 2021, Truong, a man of Asian descent, was fatally shot, leaving a community in search of answers. The incident prompted an investigation by the Decatur Police Department, who would soon identify a suspect in connection with the deadly shooting.
