On June 26, 2016, in Decatur, Alabama, 44-year-old Lawrence Edward "Eddie" Owens was found dead in his residence from a gunshot wound. The discovery was made after one of his sons, upon returning home, called 911 expressing concern over his mother's erratic behavior and his father's well-being. The son reported that his mother, Michelle Lee Owens, had been acting strangely in recent weeks due to a diagnosed mental illness and had recently purchased a pistol.
