On the evening of March 18, 2018, a dispute at a residence in the 1000 block of 5th Avenue SW in Decatur, Alabama, escalated into deadly violence. During the confrontation, 23-year-old Chaz D. Harris, a Black male, was fatally shot. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing the sound of multiple gunshots and seeing several individuals fleeing the area immediately after.
Decatur Police Department officers were dispatched to the residence, where they discovered Harris suffering from gunshot
wounds. Despite the immediate response and efforts of emergency medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators began processing the area for evidence, collecting shell casings and searching for any available surveillance footage from nearby properties that might shed light on the events that transpired.
