His mother, Lisa Ellis, remembered her son as someone who was always 'swagged out' and took great care in his appearance, often returning home to change if he saw someone else wearing the same outfit. A father of two boys, Davis was described by his mother as a homebody who enjoyed spending time with his children and playing basketball.
The investigation into Rodney's death took a violent and complicated turn in the weeks that followed. His killing was believed to have been the catalyst for another homicide, rooted in a tragic case of mistaken identity and gang retaliation.. Members of the Imperial Gangsta Bloods, a criminal street gang operating in Virginia and the District, believed that a man named Ryan Addison was responsible for Davis's murder. On the night of August 10, 2015, a high-ranking member of the gang authorized Joshua Artis, a fellow gang member, to carry out a retaliatory killing.
In the early hours of August 11, 2015, Ryan Addison was shot and killed on Elmira Street SW, just a short distance from where Davis had been found. Joshua Artis was later arrested and charged with Addison's murder. He would eventually plead guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. During legal proceedings, it was revealed that Addison had been targeted simply because he was in the vicinity of where the actual, but unidentified, killer of Rodney Davis was thought to reside. Addison, who was wearing earbuds at the time of the attack, likely never saw his assailant. Artis later expressed remorse, stating that he had killed the wrong person. While the man who avenged his death in a misguided act of street justice was brought to justice, the murder of Rodney Delonte Davis remains unsolved, and as of early 2019, police had few leads and had made no arrests in his case.
