On May 17, 1984, in the small Alaskan village of Manley Hot Springs, 38-year-old Vietnam veteran and trapper Larry Joe McVey, along with 24-year-old carpenter Dale Madajski, visited a boat landing approximately a quarter mile from town. When the men failed to return that afternoon, their concerned wives went to the landing and found McVey's boat still on the trailer and their beer left in the truck, indicating something was amiss.
