Larry Joe McVey—male, 38; records—was a Vietnam veteran and trapper living in the tiny Interior Alaska community of Manley Hot Springs when he vanished on May 17, 1984. That afternoon he drove with 24-year-old carpenter Dale Madajski to the Tanana River boat landing about a quarter-mile outside town; when they failed to return, family members went to the landing and found McVey's boat still on its trailer and their drinks left behind in the truck, signs that something had gone wrong.
