In May 1984, the small community of Manley Hot Springs, Alaska, experienced a tragic event involving the disappearance and death of several residents, including 20-year-old Dale Kevin Madajski. On May 17, Madajski, a carpenter and cabin builder originally from Michigan, went to a boat landing near the town along with Vietnam veteran Larry Joe McVey. When the two men failed to return, their families grew concerned and discovered their vehicles still at the landing, with no sign of them.
The situation escalated as more residents were reported missing, leading to a search by Alaska State Troopers. Investigations revealed blood and spent cartridge casings at the boat landing, indicating foul play. Suspicion fell on Michael Alan Silka, a drifter and Army veteran who had recently arrived in Manley Hot Springs and was last seen at the boat landing. Silka was also wanted for questioning in the disappearance of another individual from Fairbanks.
On May 19, troopers located Silka approximately 25 miles from Manley Hot Springs. When approached, Silka opened fire, fatally wounding Trooper Troy Duncan before being killed by return fire from the troopers. Subsequent searches led to the recovery of several bodies from the Tanana River, including that of Dale Madajski, who had been shot in the head. The motives behind Silka's actions remain unclear, leaving the community to grapple with the loss and unanswered questions surrounding the tragic events.
