In May 1984, the small Alaskan village of Manley Hot Springs, with a population of approximately 70, became the site of a tragic event involving Fred "Weeds" Burk, a 30-year-old Athabaskan homesteader, fur trapper, and fisherman. Burk was among several residents who went missing on May 17, 1984, after visiting a boat landing on the Tanana River, about three miles from town.
