Krystal Elizabeth Hawk, a 23-year-old Black/African American woman from Anchorage, Alaska, died on January 27, 2015. Just before dawn, around 3:30 a.m., gunfire erupted inside an East Anchorage apartment on the 6000 block of East 41st Court. One man, 27-year-old Christian Haynes, was found dead at the scene; Krystal, age 23, was gravely wounded and rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 5 a.m.
Detectives canvassed witnesses while crime-scene investigators worked through the morning, and police appealed to the public for tips as they began the double-homicide investigation.
In the months that followed, Anchorage police continued to seek answers. On August 29, 2015, officers arrested 22-year-old Michael Dorell Kelvin Reynold, known as “Boogie,” and the next day announced he had been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and with tampering with physical evidence in connection with the fatal shootings of Christian Haynes and Krystal Elizabeth Hawk. He was booked into the Anchorage Jail as the case moved forward.
Court filings and federal statements later noted that Michael Reynold was under state indictment for the murders while also facing federal proceedings tied to a broader investigation. Prosecutors alleged he was associated with the “Fairview MOB,” a group described by authorities as aligned with the Bloods; in the federal case he was sentenced for being a felon in possession of firearms, even as state murder charges proceeded separately. Those filings underscored the overlap between the homicide investigation and a larger probe of violent and gun-related crime in Anchorage at the time.
