Veronica Abouchuk, a 52-year-old Alaska Native woman, was last seen by her family in July 2018 and reported missing in February 2019. Her remains were discovered in April 2019 near mile 4.5 of the Old Glenn Highway, but she was not identified until October 2019. The investigation into her disappearance took a significant turn when Brian Steven Smith, a South African immigrant residing in Anchorage, was arrested in October 2019 for the murder of another woman, Kathleen Henry.
