In Memphis, Tennessee, on August 16, 2015, a tragic series of events led to the death of Jeremy Lampkin, a 25-year-old Black / African American male. The incident unfolded in the 600 block of Patterson Street, near the University of Memphis campus, when Lampkin attempted to intervene in a volatile dispute between a woman and her boyfriend, Antoine Hinton.
The situation began earlier that day, on August 8, 2015, when Hinton had a heated argument with his 25-year-old girlfriend, which
escalated to a severe beating with his fists and a handgun, resulting in facial fractures. While holding his girlfriend at gunpoint in her apartment, Hinton used her phone to send a text message to Lampkin, luring him to the residence.
Upon Lampkin's arrival, he was confronted by Hinton, who was armed. Hinton struck Lampkin in the face before shooting him three times, leading to his death at the scene. Following the shooting, Hinton fled but was apprehended by authorities the next day at a local motel.
Antoine Hinton, who was 29 at the time of the incident, was arrested and subsequently faced multiple charges. On May 3, 2016, a grand jury indicted Hinton on charges including murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and kidnapping. In April 2018, a Criminal Court jury convicted the 31-year-old Hinton of first-degree murder, reckless aggravated assault, especially aggravated kidnapping, aggravated kidnapping, and employment of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony. For the murder of Jeremy Lampkin, Hinton received an automatic life sentence in prison.
