On a cold January night in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 15-year-old Jaheim Walker, an African American male with dreams of a football career, was tragically cut short. On January 21, 2017, Walker was a passenger in a car with three other people, driving down Cherry Road. Suddenly, another vehicle pulled alongside them, and its occupants opened fire.
The barrage of bullets tore through the car, striking multiple passengers.
In the chaotic moments that followed, the driver of the car, despite being wounded, managed to speed away and make it to a nearby hospital. However, for Jaheim Walker, it was too late. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another 16-year-old passenger in the car was critically injured in the shooting but survived. The hail of gunfire left at least 16 shell casings scattered across the road, a grim testament to the violence that had just unfolded.
The day after the shooting, investigators made swift progress, arresting three suspects in connection with the murder of Jaheim Walker. The individuals taken into custody were 21-year-old Demarcus Johnson, 20-year-old Otha Ray, and 21-year-old Frederick Wilson. A grand jury later indicted all three men on charges of first-degree murder for the death of Jaheim Walker, as well as three counts of attempted first-degree murder for the other individuals in the car. The case was then handed over to the District Attorney's Office to move forward with the prosecution of the three men accused of ending a promising young life in a senseless act of violence.
