A 32-year-old Alaskan Native, male named Joseph W. Evans was shot and killed late in the evening on October 23, 2021, in Anchorage, Alaska. He was found suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds at approximately 8:27 p.m. inside a second-floor apartment at the Backpackers Annex on Eagle Street. Despite immediate discovery and medical attention, Mr. Evans died at the scene.
Detectives with the Anchorage Police Department treated his death as a homicide.
Their early investigation indicated that Joseph W. Evans was not the intended target. The suspect, later identified, had a dispute with another person among four people in the same apartment; multiple shots were fired into the apartment from outside. Mr. Evans was struck by one of those rounds, though he was not part of the dispute.
Officers located Russell A. Haube, identified as the shooter, the day after the homicide. On October 24, 2021, at about 3:00 PM, Haube was taken into custody without incident at a residence on the 1100-block of Friendly Lane. At the time, he was already being held on a felony probation warrant from an unrelated Assault III charge.
On November 8, 2021, a grand jury indicted 34-year-old Russell Allen Haube in connection with the death of Joseph W. Evans. The charges included first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, misconduct involving weapons and multiple counts of assault. If convicted, he faces very serious penalties, including up to 99 years for the most serious murder and attempted murder counts.
