On a tragic night in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 21-year-old Anitra Holloman was cut short in a hail of gunfire. On September 21, 2024, Holloman was among a crowd of people outside the Hush Lounge in the city's Five Points South entertainment district when multiple shooters unleashed a barrage of bullets. The attack, believed to be a targeted and possibly a murder-for-hire plot, resulted in the deaths of three other individuals and left seventeen people wounded.
Anitra, a mother and
a student at Lawson State with aspirations of becoming a teacher, was described by her family as a beautiful person with a big smile who loved to help people. She was at the lounge with friends when the shooting occurred. The chaotic scene was littered with over 100 shell casings, evidence of the 'fully automatic' weapons used in the assault. Investigators believe the perpetrators utilized machine gun conversion devices to modify their semiautomatic weapons.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Birmingham community mourned the senseless loss of life. A candlelight vigil was held for Anitra at Railroad Park, where family and friends gathered to share fond memories and grapple with their grief. Her mother, Candace Kim, expressed the profound pain of losing her daughter, who she described as her best friend. The shooting also left Anitra's young daughter without her mother.
The investigation into the mass shooting led to the arrests of three suspects: Damien McDaniel, Ny'quan Lollar, and Crishawn McLemore-Bruce. All three men were charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of Anitra Holloman, Tahj Booker, Carlos McCain, and Roderick Lynn Patterson Jr., as well as 17 counts of first-degree assault for the injuries sustained by the other victims. McDaniel's arrest was linked to several other violent crimes in the area.
