In a tragic turn of events that shook the community of a downtown Birmingham senior living facility, Roosevelt Walker, a 66-year-old male, was found deceased on September 5, 2024. The discovery was made at the Freedom Manor Apartments, a residence for individuals 62 and older, where both he and the man responsible for his death lived.
Birmingham Police officers were dispatched to the apartment complex around 11:00 a.m. after receiving a call about two people being found unresponsive.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. Walker and his long-time friend, 68-year-old Larry Darnell Collins, both of whom had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The two men were found inside one of the apartments by a friend who had a key to the residence.
The investigation into the deaths of the two close friends, who had known each other for over three decades, concluded that the incident was a murder-suicide. According to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner, Larry Darnell Collins fatally shot Roosevelt Walker before turning the gun on himself. Authorities determined that the deaths had occurred the night before they were discovered, sometime between 9:45 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on September 4, 2024.
The case has been officially closed by the Birmingham Police Department, as the individual identified as the suspect in Mr. Walker's death is also deceased. The motive behind the tragic event has not been publicly detailed, leaving friends and family to mourn the loss of two men described as being inseparable. Roosevelt Walker was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
