On April 21, 2024, at approximately 2:15 a.m., Birmingham Police Department's West Precinct officers responded to a report of gunfire in the 10 block of Holt Avenue, located in the Pratt community of Birmingham, Alabama. Upon arrival, they discovered 44-year-old Richard Lavar Edwards Jr. lying unresponsive in the front yard of a residence, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived shortly thereafter and pronounced him deceased at the scene.
