In the early morning hours of April 21, 2024, the Pratt community in Birmingham, Alabama, was disturbed by the sound of gunfire. Responding to the reports at approximately 2:15 a.m., Birmingham Police Department's West Precinct officers arrived at the 10 block of Holt Avenue to a grim scene. There, in the front yard of a residence, they found 44-year-old Richard Lavar Edwards Jr. unresponsive, having sustained an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived soon after but were unable to save him, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Richard Lavar Edwards Jr., a Black male, was a United States military veteran. Those who knew him described him as a joyous, kind, and positive individual, a good man who was loved by many. His sudden and violent death left a void in the lives of his friends and family.
