In a tragic turn of events, 19-month-old Gabriel Adriel Alonso Romero of McCalla, Alabama, died after being brought to a local hospital with multiple injuries. The young boy was taken to the emergency room at UAB Medical Center West by his mother's boyfriend, who then left the premises. Medical staff were unable to save the toddler, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was immediately notified and launched an investigation into the child's death.
Deputies quickly located and took into custody 27-year-old Oscar Espinoza Guadarrama, the boyfriend of Gabriel's mother. The circumstances surrounding the boy's injuries and the events leading up to his arrival at the hospital became the focus of the subsequent inquiry.
Following a review of the evidence gathered by sheriff's detectives, the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office issued a warrant for Guadarrama's arrest. He has since been charged with capital murder in connection with the death of young Gabriel. Guadarrama is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer without bond, awaiting further legal proceedings.
