In the early morning hours of May 15, 2024, a Bessemer police officer on patrol made a grim discovery. A white Ford Flex was stopped in the middle of Alabama Adventure Parkway, near the exit ramp for I-20/59. Inside the vehicle was 59-year-old William Barry Brannon, a White male who had been fatally shot. Brannon was on his way to work when the tragic incident occurred.
Detectives began an investigation into what appeared to be a random act of violence.
They sought information from the public, asking for anyone who might have seen something involving a white Ford SUV and another vehicle on I-20/59 northbound between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. to come forward. Their investigation led them to identify a grey sedan as a possible suspect vehicle that was seen following Brannon's SUV.
More than a month later, on June 28, 2024, the Bessemer Police Department announced a significant development in the case. An arrest had been made in connection with the deadly interstate shooting. 22-year-old Derrick Lamonte Todd Jr. was taken into custody and charged with capital murder in the death of William Barry Brannon.
