On August 4, 2023, 49-year-old Larry Douglas Oden II of Gardendale, Alabama, was involved in an incident with the Bessemer Police Department. Officers were conducting a property theft investigation in the 700 block of Academy Drive in Bessemer when Oden reportedly fled the scene. During the ensuing pursuit, he sustained a blunt force injury to the head.
