In the quiet community of Coosa County, Alabama, the life of David Tyrell Benson, a 27-year-old male, was cut tragically short in the spring of 2024. On the first of May, deputies responded to a 911 call reporting gunshots in the area of Coosa County Road 93 in Kellyton. Upon their arrival, they discovered Benson, a resident of Cottage Grove, lying on the road with gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene, and he was quickly transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for treatment of his life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, David Tyrell Benson succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead the following day, May 2, 2024. He was a graduate of Central Coosa High School's class of 2016, known for his love of basketball and spending time with friends. His death left behind a loving family, including his parents and a young son.
The Coosa County Sheriff's Office immediately launched a homicide investigation into Benson's death, a case that Sheriff Michael Howell described as a tragic event for the Cottage Grove community. The investigation unfolded over the following weeks, as law enforcement worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Investigators from the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office were assisted by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigations, the Montgomery SWAT team, and Alabama state troopers. Their collaborative efforts pointed them toward a suspect in the neighboring city of Montgomery.
A significant breakthrough in the case came on May 30, 2024, when law enforcement executed a search warrant at a residence in Montgomery. The search yielded evidence related to the homicide investigation and led to the arrest of 27-year-old Tramaine Dasean Grandison of Montgomery. Grandison was taken into custody and subsequently charged with the murder of David Tyrell Benson and first-degree theft of property. Following his arrest, he was booked into the Coosa County Jail where he was held without bond. In early October of the same year, Coosa County authorities re-arrested Grandison on the same charges of Murder and Theft of Property with a value over $2,500. He continues to be held without bond as the investigation into the death of David Tyrell Benson remains ongoing.
