In the summer of 2023, a violent encounter in Birmingham, Alabama, cut short the life of 24-year-old Jarvis Jerome Conley Jr. On the evening of Tuesday, June 20, Conley and a female companion found themselves in a heated argument with an acquaintance in the southwestern part of the city. The dispute escalated tragically, resulting in gunfire that left Conley fatally wounded and the woman with serious injuries.
First responders discovered Conley deceased, located outside a vehicle on 25th
Street Southwest. The accompanying female victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. In the immediate aftermath, Birmingham police began an intensive investigation into the double shooting, quickly identifying the incident as a homicide. Authorities indicated that the preliminary investigation suggested the victims knew their attacker and that the shooting stemmed from the prior altercation.
Within days of the shooting, the investigation led to a person of interest being interviewed by police. This eventually culminated in the arrest of Courtney Darnell Dennis. Dennis was subsequently charged in connection with the fatal shooting.
The case proceeded through the Jefferson County judicial system, leading to a jury trial. After hearing the evidence presented, the jury found Courtney Darnell Dennis guilty of the murder of Jarvis Jerome Conley Jr. In addition to the murder conviction, Dennis was also found guilty of attempted murder for the injuries sustained by the woman who was with Conley at the time of the shooting.
