In a heart-wrenching incident on June 30, 2023, a bright and energetic three-year-old Black/African American boy named Kayden Goldman died in his Birmingham, Alabama, home. The young male was momentarily left unsupervised when he discovered a loaded firearm. Tragically, Kayden accidentally shot himself. Emergency services were called, and he was rushed to Children's of Alabama hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
His mother described him as a brilliant boy who was full of life and loved to dance.
In the weeks following the devastating event, authorities launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the child's death. The focus of the investigation turned to how the child was able to access a loaded weapon. This led to the arrest of Kayden's father, 25-year-old Stephen D'Mitri Goldman.
According to court documents, Stephen Goldman was charged with reckless manslaughter. The charging documents alleged that he recklessly caused his son's death by leaving a loaded firearm within the reach and sight of the unattended toddler. Subsequently, a Jefferson County grand jury indicted him on this charge. Following his initial arrest, Goldman was released on bond while awaiting further legal proceedings.
