On April 26, 2023, 56-year-old African American male Richard Mark Carter was found with gunshot wounds outside the Food Mart located at 2258 Bessemer Road in Birmingham, Alabama. Initially, authorities believed he had been stabbed, but an autopsy later confirmed he had been shot. Carter was transported to UAB Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
