In the early hours of a Monday morning in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 30-year-old Devarta Dedre Thomas was cut short by an act of violence. On March 20, 2023, shots rang out in the 800 block of 52nd Place North, a street in the city's East Lake neighborhood. When police officers arrived on the scene around 12:45 a.m., they found Thomas lying unresponsive in the roadway. He had sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel.
