On the evening of November 9, 2023, a young man named Dakota R. Lamons was riding his bicycle in Cullman County, Alabama. The 19-year-old male was traveling along Alabama 91, near County Road 501, approximately eight miles south of Hanceville, when his life was abruptly cut short. A vehicle, later identified as a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, struck Lamons and fled the scene.
The impact of the collision threw him from his bicycle, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement officials from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's Highway Patrol Division began an investigation, seeking information from the public to identify the driver responsible for the fatal hit-and-run. Investigators believed the vehicle to be a white 2007-2014 Chevrolet Silverado or a GMC Sierra, noting that the passenger side black mirror was missing.
A break in the case came on Monday, November 13, 2023. At approximately 5:15 p.m., Troopers with ALEA's Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit located and arrested 36-year-old Ryan J. Jolly of Harpersville. Jolly was subsequently charged with manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident with death in connection with the incident that claimed the life of Dakota Lamons. The investigation into the tragic death of the young Hanceville man is ongoing.
