In a heart-wrenching turn of events, six-year-old Jessie Taylor McCormack of Alexandria passed away in January 2023, the victim of a brutal beating. His death marked the second tragedy to strike the family in just a few years, following the 2019 murder of his 18-month-old brother, Enzo McCormack.
Authorities were alerted to Jessie's plight when they were called to a hospital for a child abuse case.
The young boy was unconscious and was subsequently transferred to a hospital in Birmingham for more intensive care. Two days later, Jessie succumbed to his injuries. An investigation revealed that he had been beaten with a belt or a similar object and by hand.
The boy's father, 29-year-old Joshua Clark, was at the hospital when officers arrived. He was initially arrested on a charge of aggravated child abuse. Following Jessie's death, the charge against Clark was upgraded to capital murder. He is currently being held without bond at the Calhoun County Jail. At the time of the fatal incident, Jessie was in his father's custody.
This devastating event echoed the earlier loss of Jessie's younger brother, Enzo. The boys' mother, Samantha McCormack, and her boyfriend at the time, Robert Elmore, were charged with capital murder in connection with Enzo's death. Court records from that period indicated that Jessie had also shown signs of abuse. In a tragic twist of fate, despite the previous concerns for their safety, the children had been returned to the custody of their parents. Elmore was later convicted of capital murder in Enzo's death and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
