In the late evening of Saturday, September 3, 2022, a burst of gunfire shattered the night in a Birmingham, Alabama neighborhood, leaving two young men dead and two others wounded. Jalen Tolbert, a 24-year-old male, was one of the victims in what police would later describe as a double homicide. The incident took place in the 100 block of 3rd Avenue West, where officers were dispatched following multiple Shot Spotter alerts indicating a barrage of over thirty rounds had been fired.
Upon
their arrival, law enforcement discovered a grim scene. Tolbert and another man, identified as Marquse Yarbrough, were found lying in the roadway, both having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services transported them to UAB Hospital, but their injuries proved to be too severe, and both men were pronounced dead. The violence of that night also left its mark on two other individuals who were shot but survived with non-life-threatening injuries. One of these men was found inside a nearby apartment, while the other managed to get to the hospital by a private vehicle.
The preliminary investigation into the shooting suggested that the deadly fusillade may have been sparked by a verbal altercation involving one of the victims just before the shots rang out. It is believed that multiple suspects then opened fire on the group. Despite the number of people present and the intensity of the violence, those responsible for the deaths of Jalen Tolbert and Marquse Yarbrough have not yet been brought to justice.
As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the double homicide, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
