On a tragic Monday evening in Birmingham, Alabama, 26-year-old Tamaiya Morton's life was cut short in a fatal shooting. The incident unfolded just after 6 p.m. on March 7, 2022, in the Kingston housing community. First responders were called to the 900 block of 46th Place North where they discovered a vehicle that had crashed into a utility pole. Inside the driver's seat of the SUV was Tamaiya Morton, who had sustained gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The preliminary investigation by the Birmingham Police Department quickly pointed to a person of interest. Officers located and took a woman into custody at a nearby apartment complex shortly after the shooting. The ensuing investigation led to charges being filed against 24-year-old Raven Thompson of Birmingham. Thompson was formally charged with capital murder in connection with Tamaiya Morton's death. Evidence suggested that Morton had been shot while she was driving, which led to her vehicle crashing.
