In the East Lake neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama, a tragic event unfolded on the afternoon of Saturday, March 5, 2022, that cut short the life of 13-year-old Jaylon Keith Palmore. The young male was on his front porch in the 7500 block of 1st Avenue South when gunfire erupted from two passing vehicles. Jaylon was struck by a bullet in the stomach and was rushed to a local hospital, but he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
Another individual was also wounded during the shooting but was expected to recover.
Jaylon was an eighth-grade student at Ossie Ware Mitchell Middle School. His death marked another instance of a child falling victim to gun violence in the city, prompting pleas from community members and officials for an end to such senseless acts. In the wake of the shooting, Birmingham's mayor and acting police chief expressed their frustration over the rising number of children being killed and urged the public to come forward with any information that could lead to an arrest.
For several months, the investigation into Jaylon's death continued without a named suspect. Then, on Thursday, September 22, 2022, the Birmingham Police Department announced a significant development in the case. Detectives had identified 30-year-old Tadarius Rashard Hammond of Birmingham as the suspect. After presenting their findings to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office, a warrant for Capital Murder was issued for Hammond. At the time the warrant was issued, Hammond was already incarcerated at the Jefferson County Jail on unrelated charges. He remained in custody with no bond set for the murder charge.
