On the evening of November 12, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace at the Serenity Apartments at Valley Creek in Birmingham, Alabama. When Birmingham Police Department officers arrived around 6:30 p.m., drawn by a ShotSpotter alert that detected over 30 rounds fired, they discovered a chaotic scene. Two men were found outside a vehicle with gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening and were taken to UAB Hospital. Inside a vehicle, however, two other men were found unresponsive in the backseat, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
One of the victims was identified as 22-year-old Anthony Murray, a male resident of Birmingham. The other man in the backseat was 24-year-old Ronald Deshawn Smith Jr., also from Birmingham. Both Murray and Smith were pronounced deceased at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel. The Birmingham Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the double slaying.
For a year and a half, the case remained under investigation with no immediate arrests made as authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough. A significant development finally came on April 27, 2023, when 19-year-old Koreon Daisean Johnson was taken into custody. Johnson was subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths of both Anthony Murray and Ronald Deshawn Smith Jr. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail and held without bond, marking a pivotal turn in the pursuit of justice for the two young men whose lives were cut short.
