On November 27, 1898, Chief Deputy Sheriff Robert W. Warnock of Jefferson County, Alabama, was fatally shot while attempting to arrest an escapee. As he stood on the steps of a residence, the fugitive opened fire, resulting in Warnock's immediate death. The assailant was subsequently apprehended, convicted, and executed by hanging on February 2, 1900.
