In the early evening of New Year's Day 2021, the life of Carl Joseph Miserendino III, a 35-year-old White / Caucasian male, was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. His body was discovered by Birmingham Police Department officers at approximately 9:05 p.m., lying unresponsive beside a house in the 4000 block of 40th Avenue North in the Inglenook area. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived at the scene and pronounced him deceased.
The initial investigation pointed to a homicide, marking the city's first of the new year.
The investigation into the death of Miserendino, a financial adviser, quickly led detectives to identify a suspect: 22-year-old Isaiah Williams White. A warrant for White's arrest on the charge of capital murder was issued on January 6, 2021. The search for White extended beyond state lines, culminating in his capture by authorities in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on January 28, 2021. Miserendino's vehicle was also recovered in Florida.
Following his arrest, White faced additional warrants in Florida. During an interview with a Birmingham Police Department detective, White reportedly admitted to shooting and killing Miserendino, claiming it was accidental and occurred while he was stealing the victim's vehicle because he needed a car to return to Florida. White was slated for extradition back to Alabama to be held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond. In a related incident, White was also accused of setting fire to a Volkswagen Atlas registered to Miserendino and his mother in Palm Coast, Florida, on January 2, 2021, leading to an arson charge.
