On the night of February 6, 2021, between 10 p.m. and midnight, 32-year-old Blake Trevor "BJ" Berry Jr. of Hoover, Alabama, was fatally struck by a vehicle while walking along Interstate 459 southbound, near the 17-mile marker, approximately one mile north of Hoover. The driver involved fled the scene, leaving Berry unresponsive about 10 yards off the roadway; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
