In the late hours of a Thursday evening in Bessemer, Alabama, tragedy struck a road crew working on Interstate 59/20. Patrick Todd Jackson, a 58-year-old male from the nearby community of Sterrett in Shelby County, was on the job at mile marker 11 around 9:30 p.m. on September 9, 2021. A dedicated worker who had retired from the Alabama Department of Transportation after many years of service, he was known as a loving husband and father who enjoyed tending to his land and spending time with his
two dogs.
The darkness of the night was shattered when a vehicle plowed through the construction zone, striking Jackson. The driver did not stop to render aid, instead fleeing the scene and leaving a life hanging in the balance. The impact proved to be fatal for Jackson, a man described as an avid Alabama fan who deeply loved his family. His sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through his community.
The following morning, law enforcement officials located and took into custody a 48-year-old suspect in connection with the fatal hit-and-run. The individual was booked into the Jefferson County Jail in the early hours of Friday.
