On January 27, 2021, Mikel JaDarius Pickens, a 19-year-old from Bessemer, Alabama, was fatally shot at the Urban Market Grocery Store. Authorities reported that the incident occurred around 7:50 p.m., when Pickens sustained gunshot injuries during what appeared to be an assault. Emergency responders transported him to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead the following morning.
