In the late summer of 2021, a gathering of family and friends in Anniston, Alabama, turned into a scene of tragedy. On the evening of August 18, 2021, while enjoying the company of his loved ones, 33-year-old Maurice M. McCauley’s life was cut short by gunfire. The abrupt violence of that day not only claimed a life but also left a community searching for answers.
Two other individuals were also injured during the shooting.
For nearly two years, the investigation into the death of the male victim continued, driven by the Anniston Police Department and the Calhoun County Major Crimes Unit. Investigators worked to piece together the events of that fateful night, eventually identifying two local men as the primary suspects in the fatal shooting. The breakthrough in the case brought a renewed sense of hope for justice for McCauley and his grieving family.
In the spring of 2023, the investigation culminated in the arrests of two Anniston residents. On April 10, 2023, 21-year-old Cederick Lamon Woolverton was taken into custody and transported to the Calhoun County Jail. The second suspect, 26-year-old Angelo Terry Smith, was already incarcerated at the same facility on unrelated charges since March 1, 2023. Both men were subsequently charged with the murder of Maurice M. McCauley, bringing a measure of resolution to a case that had remained open for more than a year and a half. Authorities have indicated that the investigation is ongoing, and further charges related to the injuries sustained by the other two victims are being considered.
