In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Birmingham, Alabama, a dispute escalated into deadly violence, claiming the life of 30-year-old Charles Edward Gregory. On April 19, 2020, at a residence in the 1000 block of Alabama Avenue Southwest, what began as a verbal altercation tragically ended with Gregory suffering a fatal gunshot wound. When police arrived, they found him on the living room floor.
He was quickly transported to UAB Hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The initial investigation pointed to a heated argument that preceded the shooting, with the suspect fleeing the scene before law enforcement could arrive. The death of Charles Edward Gregory was part of a particularly violent weekend in Jefferson County, which saw a total of four homicides. This rash of violence prompted public concern and a determined effort by the Birmingham Police Department to bring those responsible to justice.

Demarcus Emmanuel Booker, 28 years old at the time, was taken into custody and charged with the murder of Charles Edward Gregory. Following his arrest, Demarcus Emmanuel Booker faced legal proceedings for his alleged role in the death of Charles Edward Gregory. He was tried and subsequently convicted of capital murder. The conviction carried a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Booker is currently incarcerated at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility.
